Updates from State Bar of Michigan's Health Care Law Section Annual Meeting

Members of the Foster Swift Health Care Law Practice Group attended the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Michigan's Health Care Law Section on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  A highlight of the day was when Gary McRay was inaugurated to the Health Care Law Section's first Class of Fellows.  The Class of Fellows recognizes distinguished practitioners for their professional contributions and dedication to the practice of health care law.  McRay was one of only 10 attorneys inducted as a Fellow.  Grateful to receive such an honor, McRay expressed that he "would like to thank the State Bar of Michigan for the award" and noted that he was "honored to be included with the other lawyers in the first class of fellows."

In addition to McRay's honor, two other Foster Swift attorneys were elected to positions on the Health Care Law Section's Substantive Law Committee.  Johanna Novak, from Marquette, joined the Payor Subcommittee, while Mindi Johnson, of Grand Rapids, joined the Provider Subcommittee.

All members who attended the Annual Meeting enjoyed the opportunity to network with fellow health care law colleagues and discuss the latest developments in the health care law realm.  The Annual Meeting included a variety of informative updates and educational programs, including the following:

  1. an update on Michigan legislative activities;
  2. a presentation on understanding accountable care organizations;
  3. a panel presentation on medical marijuana in Michigan;
  4. an update on health information exchanges; and
  5. a keynote address given by Attorney General Bill Schuette.
